Things to do and see during your stay at Annie's Place, Birsay

Day 1 Saturday Arrival

Landing at St Margarets Hope (Pentland Ferries) or Stromness (Northlink Ferries) or Kirkwall Airport, drive via Dounby to the NW coast of Mainland Orkney, counting the trees as you go!

All roadsigns point to Birsay.....naturally, for you are driving to the ancient Capital of the Orkney Isles......the village of Palace, seat of the Earls of Orkney, where St Magnus lived as a young boy.

On arrival at Annie's Place, next to the village shop Palace Stores you will see our wrought-iron nameplate beside the sky blue door of Annie's Place.

Welcome

Start unpacking, then take a stroll out to the access point for the causeway over to the Brough of Birsay, a tidal island with an ancient Norse settlement, or just sit on our bench above the shoreline, looking across Birsay Bay to spot the seals on the rocks and the birds on the shore.

Then up to the Barony Hotel  for an evening meal. If you don't want to go by car it is within walking distance back to Annie's Place on a summer evening, hearing as you go, the curlews and oystercatchers over fields of Orkney bere, and gazing out to a full seascape beyond Birsay Bay to the ever changing colours of clouds that make a fine Scottish sunset.
