Guests staying for their Orkney holiday at our self catering apartment often ask us to recommend interesting places to visit nearby. Top of our list is Kirbuster Farm Musem which is about 10 minutes drive from Annie's Place. Guests really appreciate the experience as it is the last un-restored example of a traditional ‘Firehoose’ in Northern Europe. The house has a central hearth, complete with peat fire, and a stone neuk bed reminiscent of the Neolithic interiors that can be seen at sites such as Skara Brae.

The short video below of the central hearth provides a hint of why Kirbuster is worth visiting, especially after you have been to Skara Brae, as Kirbuster gives you a real sense of how people in the past lived in homes with central fires, beds in the walls, basic equipment and animals sleeping on one half of the main room with a hen roosting pole above the door!
